Climate Fund’s initiative on Smart Cities

The Smart Cities Initiative launches and supports innovative city projects that are focused on demonstration. Communities and cities in Austria are important partners for the transformation of energy systems in behalf of climate protection. The Smart Cities Initiative contributes to the Austrian government’s climate and energy strategy and supports the Austrian communities and their citizens to participate actively in the energy system. The initiative is supported financially by the Austrian Government. Due to that only Austrian partners are eligible for funding.

Mission Statement                 

The subsequent goals for all provisions of the Smart Cities Initiative are guiding to bring sustainable city development to succeed on all levels:

#1: To support the Austrian cities and communities on their way to a "zero emission city“

#2: To establish and push on urban energy transformation in Austrian cities and communities as holistic process

#3: To provide know – how on Smart Cities for learning processes of city actors and enhance capacities in city and municipal governments

The funding Programme Smart Cities Demo – Living Urban Innovation

‘Smart Cities Demo’ positions itself as systemic integrative funding Programme with an experimental aspect under consideration of municipal and regional decision – makers. (Cities as testbed).

Beginning in 2018 a five year perspective for integrative system - comprehensive topics was developed, considering the embedment in regional context in the following six action fields: 

I.      Energy supply & energy use

II.     Building stock & new construction

III.    The exchange of goods and services

IV.    City ecology & climate – change adaptions

V.     Settlement structure & mobility

VI.    Communication & networking

All projects are meant to contribute to one of the following three programme goals:

1.     To lead research findings into practice

2.     To create spaces for experimentation in real cities

3.     To generate additional communal benefits
