15.11.2016 | 12:00 Uhr | Smart City EXPO | Gran Via Exhibition Centre, Avinguda de Joan Carles I, 64, L'Hospitalet de Llobregat, 08908 Barcelona, Spain

Are Smart Cities always Sustainable?

The workshop aims at bringing together people working in public administration, researchers, business, NGOs and civil society to jointly discuss around the capacity of smart cities concept (smart governance, smart building, smart mobility) to transform a city into a more sustainable one. To what extend smart devices and services serve or not the sustainability of the city? Good and bad experiences from research and practice communities will be presented and discussed in order to identify the best ideas, methodologies and practices to be introduced at the very first step of smart solutions.

Workshop outline

Urban sustainability is understood as the nexus of economic, social, environmental and cultural issues. The challenge is to create, with a systemic approach, livable cities through economic growth and social and economic equality, vibrancy and accessibility, within global transitions (climate change, technological revolution, migrations, economic crisis, etc.) and environmental limits. A smart city is a vision that integrates information and communication technologies to manage different city’s assets (economy, mobility, governance, way of life, etc.) and to improve services while, in principle, reducing energy, resource consumption, greenhouse gas and other polluting emissions.
A holistic and integrated approach in the field of Smart Cities is essential for improved, sustainable concepts for future urban environments. So the issue is to know if and to what extend smart cities take on the challenge of sustainable cities. To what extend all required sustainable properties are fulfilled by the achievements of smart cities projects? Which are the sustainability criteria that are more difficult to satisfy or most often neglected? Why?
The workshop will deepen the concept of “Sustainable smart cities” from the presentation and the discussion of real urban achievements, enlightening good as well as bad examples around a panel of researchers and stakeholders.

The event is co-organised by UERA (Urban Europe Research Alliance) and the Joint Programme Smart cities of EERA (European Energy Research Alliance). Please register for this event: here
