The Joint Programming Initiative Urban Europe
The Joint Programming Initiative (JPI) Urban Europe aims to address a comprehensive and systemic view of the current and future urban challenges by not only bringing into discussion technological issues, but also taking into account environmental and socio-economical aspects.
The main goal of the Joint Programming Initiative (JPI) Urban Europe is to explore systemic urbanisation aspects in order to ultimately integrate new technological achievements within latest findings in social sciences, spatial planning and economics. Therefore, the thematic focus lies on:
- Vibrant Urban Economies
- Welfare and Finance
- Urban Environmental Sustainability and Resilience
- Accessibility and Connectivity
- Urban Governance and Participation
Apart from setting up a Strategic Research and Innovation Agenda and funding joint research projects, the activities of JPI Urban Europe also focus on 1) analysing long-term trends and their impacts on European cities, 2) building a structure that brings together different stakeholders and promotes knowledge exchange and cooperation among them (e.g. within Urban Europe Forum, Scientific Advisory Board, Urban Europe Research Alliance) and 3) aligning national research and innovation programs on urban matters.
As of February 2018, following countries are active members of the JPI Urban Europe network: Austria, Belgium, Cyprus, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, Latvia, the Netherlands, Norway, Slovenia, Sweden, United Kingdom. Apart from that, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Spain and Turkey have observer status. Moreover, further countries are being constantly involved in specific activities.
